It was the 5th of June. I knew that someday, this day would eventually arrive. My friends and I have been practicing very hard for this very day. We had been sacrificing our school work, just to get this very project turn out successfully. We often stayed back after school, to get this project done. The 5th of June was the perfect time to show the people out there, how talented we actually are.
At first, all of us felt very excited. We could not wait to reach the destination. But the moment we reached the destination, all of us felt very nervous. We really wanted to win this competition. This competition really meant everything to us as not everyone was as lucky as us to get the opportunity to take part in this competition.
After registering our names at the counter, we went to the place that we were assigned to. We started to practice for quite a number of times when suddenly, we were told that we had some problems.
The person told us that the monster in our skit had to be made of cardboards or other scrap materials. The problem was that, we did not build any monster for our skit. Instead, we asked one of our members to act as the monster. There was absolutely, no time to build a monster within that short period of time and we obviously did not have the materials needed to build a monster that is able to operate on its own.
We were told that our skit would start in a few minutes time and we still have not figure out the solution to that problem. We began to panic when we saw the students from the various schools that came, holding on to such creative and huge monsters that they had built on their own.
Finally, one of our teachers came out with a brilliant solution to that problem. All of us were very lucky as our second idea was approved by the person in charged. So, the only thing that we had to worry about now, was our skit.
“Now, let us put our hands together and welcome the students of Junyuan Secondary!” announced the speaker for that event. We tried to hide how we actually felt as we tried our best to look very calm.
Finally, we came to the end of our skit. We felt very relieved as the pressure was not on us anymore. The judges came onto the stage, where we had done our performance. The judges made some comments on our props, all of which was positive comments. They also asked us a few questions. Judging on the remarks they had given us, we had more confidence in winning this competition.
“Thank you very much for taking part in this competition. We wish all of you the very best. Please come back later, at about four o’clock, to find out which school will be going to Australia to compete with the students there”.
We had already done our very best and it was up to the judges whether we are good enough to go to Australia and continue the competition. So, we went to Orchard to have our lunch and also to have a tour in the shopping malls found there. At around four o’clock, we came back to check out the results.
When we reached the school, most of the participants were already seated. So, we quickly settled down. When we were already seated down, all of us felt very tense. We took hold of each others’ hands and squeezed them real hard.
“The schools that I will be mentioning in a short while, please proceed to the front to collect your prizes. And the schools that will be going to Australia to compete with the students there are, Bedok South Secondary, Haig Girls Secondary and the final school is… Junyuan Secondary!”.
All of us were very shocked as we thought that we had done badly compared to other schools. Despite having a last minute monster, we still won. So, all of us came stomping down the hall to receive our prizes. We did not even care what people might say about our attitude as we really felt very happy.
This really was a once in a lifetime opportunity as neither of us had been to Australia before. We let out tears of happiness as we got the opportunity to go to another country and we need not pay a single cent.
